The timing chain keeps the crankshaft and camshafts in step. When the chain, its guides or its tensioners wear, the engine can still run, but it is living on borrowed time. In our Sharjah workshop timing chain work is one of the most common major engine repairs on Range Rovers.
The classic symptom: a rattle on cold start
The most common early sign is a metallic rattle for a few seconds after the engine starts from cold, often after the car has stood overnight. It happens because worn tensioners take a moment to build oil pressure and take up the slack.
Other warning signs
- Check engine light with camshaft or crankshaft correlation fault codes
- Rough idle or hesitation, especially when cold
- Rattle or whine that rises with engine speed
- Metal particles found in the oil during a service
Engines we see it on
5.0 V8 supercharged: used in the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and SVR models. Wear of the timing chain guides and tensioners is a well known issue, and the cold start rattle is the giveaway.
Ingenium engines: the 2.0 four cylinder engines used in the Evoque, Velar and Discovery Sport have suffered from timing chain stretch on some versions. Correct oil grade and change intervals matter a lot.
Why acting early saves money
Replacing a chain, guides and tensioners is a planned job with a known cost. Waiting until the chain jumps a tooth can mean bent valves, damaged pistons and a full engine rebuild. The difference can be several times the price.
How we diagnose it
- Listen to the engine from cold
- Full diagnostic scan and live camshaft timing data
- Physical inspection of tensioners and guides where needed
- Clear quote on WhatsApp before any work starts
Preventing timing chain wear
Use the correct Land Rover oil specification, change it on time or sooner in hot conditions, and do not ignore a rattle. A regular Range Rover service with the right oil is the cheapest protection you can buy.

Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with a timing chain rattle?
The engine may run normally for a while, but wear continues. If a chain jumps a tooth or a guide breaks, the result can be serious engine damage. Have it diagnosed as soon as you hear it.
Which Range Rover engines are known for timing chain wear?
The 5.0 V8 supercharged engine is known for wear of timing chain guides and tensioners, and some Ingenium four cylinder engines have suffered from chain stretch. Diagnosis on the actual car is what counts.
How do you confirm a timing chain problem?
We combine a diagnostic scan for camshaft and crankshaft correlation faults with live data and a physical inspection, then quote the repair before any work starts.
