The UAE has a large market of used Range Rovers, and prices can look very attractive. The difference between a good buy and a costly one is usually hidden in systems you cannot see on a short test drive. This is the checklist our technicians follow.
1. Full diagnostic scan first
Every module stores fault history: engine, gearbox, suspension, ABS, body and infotainment. Faults that were recently cleared often leave traces. A scan tells you more in ten minutes than an hour of driving.
2. Air suspension
- Check ride height on all four corners after the car has stood for a while
- Raise and lower through every height mode
- Listen to how long the compressor runs
3. Engine
- Listen to a true cold start for timing chain rattle
- Look for oil leaks and coolant leaks around pipes and the water pump
- Check coolant level and condition
- Check for smoke and rough idle
4. Gearbox and drivetrain
- Smooth shifts up and down, no judder when pulling away
- No fluid leaks from the gearbox sump or connector sleeve
- Transfer case operation and no clunks from the driveline
5. Cooling and AC
Check the AC is cold at idle in traffic, not only at speed. Weak AC can mean a leak, a blocked condenser or a tired compressor.
6. Electrics and comfort features
- Infotainment, cameras and parking sensors
- Windows, mirrors, seats, soft-close doors and tailgate
- Keyless entry and electronic parking brake
7. Brakes, tyres and body
Brake disc and pad condition, tyre age and even wear, signs of accident repair and mismatched paint.
8. Service history
Look for regular oil services with the correct specification, and records of major work such as air suspension or timing chain replacement.
